Kissing with the lips corresponds to kissing with the soul; and when we kiss holy things, we ought to kiss them with the soul and heart as well as the lips.

As a Protestant coming into Orthodoxy, so much was unfamiliar in the beginning and I equated much with Roman Catholicism. As time went on and I learned, I realized the error of my way. The veneration of icons is an important part of Orthodox spiritual worship and is something that touches the soul in ways that can only be understood through experience.
